About the Town of Lexington and Lexington County

I have resided in Lexington County my entire life.  The towns of Lexington, West Columbia, and the shores of Lake Murray are all areas in Lexington County I have called home.

In 1785 Lexington County was established, the name was changed from Saxe Gotha to Lexington in honor of the Massachusetts battle in the Revolutionary War.  The County's first courthouse was built in Granby, located very close to present day Cayce.

In 1820 the county seat was moved from the flood prone area of Granby to the high land area of present day town of Lexington. The town was known as Lexington Courthouse during most of the 19th century as the town consisted of the courthouse and just a few residences.

In the late 1800's the town was incorporated and was populated by lawyers, doctors, farmers, and many other tradespeople.  There were several schools, A gristmill, a sawmill, 2 churches, a carriage factory, a tannery, livestock farmers, blacksmiths and more.  The main crops of the area were aided by the proximity to twelve mile creek. The main crops were cotton, corn, sweet potatoes, and lumber.

Today Lexington is still the political center of Lexington County. It is one of the fastest growing areas in the entire nation and continues to experience remarkable growth.  Real estate  (Commercial and Residential), excellent schools, and reasonable taxes are all major components that make Lexington so desirable.
