About Columbia SC

The heart of Columbia is the original city, built at the confluence of the Broad and Saluda Rivers, near the geographic center of South Carolina. This is where the oldest neighborhoods are found. Many of the state's banking headquarters, corporate and legal offices and major medical facilities are located in Central Columbia. State government offices, the University of South Carolina and other major employers are situated downtown. The convenience of living nearby one's workplace makes Central Columbia a desirable area of town. There are new homes and new apartment communities being built in town.

Columbia was settled by Europeans in the early 1700s and chosen to be the site of South Carolina's new state capital in 1786. It was chartered as a town in 1805 and as a city in 1854. Columbia was named for Christopher Columbus, and it was South Carolina's first planned city and the second planned city in the United States (Savannah was the first). Despite this, Columbia did not have a single paved street until Main Street was surfaced in 1908.

The 1990s and early 2000s also saw revitalization in the downtown area. The Congaree Vista district along Gervais Street, once known as a warehouse district, became a exciting center for art galleries, shops, and restaurants. The Colonial Life Arena opened in 2002, and brought several big-named concerts and shows to Columbia. The Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center opened in 2004, and a new convention center hotel opened in September 2007. Several residential developments are also in the works for the Vista

The new developments in the Vista, the Congaree River, the Riverwalk, Convention Centers, Childrens Museums, Downtown development, along with Main Street redevelopment are all qualities that make Columbia SC attractive.  The established areas of Shandon, Devine Street, Forest Acres, Five Points, and Rosewood are all factors that will keep Columbia, South Carolina on the move upward for the years to come.
